What is the Rotator cuff?

A good metaphor for our shoulder joint socket would be like a golf ball that sits on a shallow small tee!

The arm bone (the humerus) effectively has a large ball on the end that fits into a very shallow small socket and this forms the glenohumeral joint

The shoulder joint is held together by various ligaments, but it is the rotator cuff that provides much of the stability.

The rotator cuff is important helps strap the golf ball (the head of the humerus) onto our metaphorical tee (or glenoid), centralising it and keeping it secure.

All four rotator cuff muscles work in unison when you lift your arm up and pull the joint together, stabilising your shoulder. These tendons can tear and this is something that is increasingly common as we age.

What are the Sub-Acromial and Sub-Deltoid bursae?

Bursae (plural for bursa) are small, slippery cushions filled with fluid that help reduce friction between bones, muscles, and tendons in your joints.

There are two in the shoulder call ed the sub-acromial and sub-deltoid bursae. Think of them like tiny pillows that keep everything gliding smoothly when you move.

Shoulder bursitis happens when these small, fluid-filled sac (called a bursa) that cushions your shoulder joint becomes irritated or swollen. This can cause pain, stiffness, and make simple movements—like lifting your arm—feel uncomfortable or even sharp.

Radial Shockwave Therapy:

In Radial Shockwave compressed air accelerates a projectile up to 80 to 90 kph within a guiding tube that strikes a metal applicator placed on your skin. The kinetic energy is converted into a radial shock wave or pressure wave.

The pressure wave penetrates tissue to a depth of 2-3 cm through the skin to the injured part of your body.

The energy spreads outwards (like ripples in water). It works best on larger, more superficial areas (larger tendons and general soft tissue). It is very effective for many common tendinopathies.

Focused Shockwave Therapy:

Focused Shockwave achieves this effect a different way. A powerful flow of electricity runs into crystals that are arranged in a precise way. This current causes mechanical (as the crystals vibrate) stress which forms pressure waves. It concentrates these waves into a single focal point, a bit like how a magnifying glass focuses light.

Is Shockwave Therapy painful?
