The Science behind IDD Therapy and how to Relieve Spinal Stenosis

At Buxton and Bakewell Osteopathy Clinics we offer latest treatment technologies. We have been offering IDD Therapy since 2017 and we are very experienced practitioners.

Want to find out more on how our IDD Therapy can help you?

What is Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal Stenosis is a common reason for back pain.

This is when the canals that house the spinal cord and allow nerves to exit spine become too narrow.

This occurs as we get older because bony calcific growths (known as osteophytes) form on the vertebra and spinal joints.

Our discs also shrink and bulge with age and our ligaments inside the spine thicken.

What is a Degenerative Disc?

Degenerative disc disease is the progressive deterioration of the discs between the vertebrae in the spine. The intervertebral discs shrink as we become older and ‘desiccate’. As part of this process the discs will bulge as they become thinner to make less space for other nearby structures such as nerves.

In addition to the bony structures described above, there are soft tissues present in the spine, including ligaments and fat. Inflammation and swelling of these tissues can also contribute to the problem.

Things to be aware of that are clinically significant and indicate that you need to take further action when you have Degenerative Disc are:

  • Severe impingement can weaken the ankle when walking (known as foot drop)
  • Progressive leg weakness
  • In extreme (but rare) cases loss of bowel or bladder control and tingling/numbness in the groin area indicates a possible medical emergency

What is IDD Therapy?

IDD Therapy is the latest, most effective non-invasive treatment for spinal disc problems, disc degeneration and associated pain from trapped nerves. We offer specialist IDD Therapy to patients across the Midlands and Greater Manchester.

IDD stands for Intervertebral Differential Dynamics Therapy. It can be best described as a new technologically advanced treatment that bridges the gap between manual therapy and surgery. It is non-invasive and pain-free.

What IDD Therapy Treats

IDD Therapy is a new technologically advanced disc treatment therapy that aims to target and relieve pressure from painful disc conditions in the spine, including sciatica.

Disc-related problems are often caused by a herniated or slipped disc or prolapsed intervertebral disc (PIVD); these are all common terms that many of us may have heard before. Disc protrusions, disc bulges or nerve root impingement are other terms that can also be applied.

If you’re looking for a natural approach to managing pain or improving your physical health, IDD Therapy may be the right choice for you.

The Buxton Back Care Program for Spinal Stenosis & Degenerative Discs

Offers a structured plan with effective latest treatment technology for treating your herniated disc.
By integrating IDD Therapy and Osteopathy and the advice we give you, this program aims to resolve your pain and get you back to doing what you love doing.

  • Diagnostic Imaging: MRI or X-rays are reviewed (or ordered) to confirm your disc herniation, its location, and severity.
  • Treatment Planning: If IDD Therapy is appropriate, a customized treatment plan is created—often including frequency, duration, and any other useful therapies.

Latest Treatment Technology for Herniated Discs using IDD Therapy

  • Decompression Sessions: The IDD Therapy machine gently stretches and decompresses the spine in the exact location where you have your herniated disc.
  • Therapy is applied in a controlled gentle manner (some people go to sleep!) using precise computer controlled pulling forces. This relieves pressure on the herniated disc and helps restore disc health. It reduces inflammation and causes the disc bulge to retract.
  • Session Details:
    • Typically lasts 26 minutes per session.
    • Conducted 2-3 times per week, depending on severity.
    • Most programs involve 10-18 sessions over 5–7 weeks.
  • Supplemental Therapies: May include heat/ice, manual therapy, or gentle exercises to enhance results.
  • Progress Tracking: Ongoing evaluation of pain, function, and mobility to adjust the plan if needed.

Outcome: Decompression helps reduce pain, inflammation, and nerve irritation, allowing for healing and better movement.

3

Road to Recovery & Breaking the Cycle

  • Rehabilitation Exercises: A guided home or clinic-based exercise program to strengthen core muscles, improve flexibility, and stabilize the spine.
  • Postural Training: Education on ergonomics, correct lifting techniques, and posture adjustments to reduce spinal stress.
  • Lifestyle Modifications:
    • Weight management if applicable.
    • Improved movement habits and daily activity planning.
  • Periodic Check-ups: Follow-up visits to monitor recovery, reinforce exercises, and prevent setbacks.
  • Optional Maintenance IDD Sessions: In some cases, occasional decompression sessions may be recommended as a preventive measure.

Outcome: You return to daily activities with improved strength and confidence, reducing the risk of future disc problems and breaking the pain cycle.
